Germany
History
Germany is a free democratic and social constitutional state in Central Europe. Germany is bordered by nine states and by the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Alps. Within the European Union, it is the most populous country and the second most popular immigration country in the world after the United States.
In 1517, the monk and theology professor Martin Luther nailed 95 theses on indulgences and penance to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. In doing so, he initiated the Reformation of the church, which continues to shape the religious landscape in the German-speaking world to this day, but is becoming less and less important.
Germany is home to immigrants from 194 countries – with more than 15 million people from a migrant background.
